First Time Hiring a Domestic Helper? Your Beginner’s Guide!

  • by

Not sure where to start when hiring your first helper? 😰
Don’t worry — here’s a quick checklist to help you get started with confidence 👇

🧾 Documents & Procedures — Shing Yu’s Got You Covered

Sign the Standard Employment Contract — It’s legally required and must be approved by the Immigration Department. Don’t rely on verbal agreements!

Work can only begin after the visa is approved.
Starting work before visa approval is illegal and may lead to prosecution.
Our Shing Yu team can handle the whole process for you.

Get insurance.
“Employees’ Compensation Insurance” is mandatory.
We also recommend adding medical insurance for extra protection — for both employer and helper.

🏠 Accommodation & Living Arrangements

✅ Provide suitable accommodation — the helper must live at the contract address.
It doesn’t have to be a private room, but helpers cannot sleep in the kitchen or bathroom.

✅ Offer either reasonable meals or a food allowance (HK$1,236/month).

✅ Provide at least one rest day per week.

💬 Communication & Expectations

✅ Be clear about job duties from the start — cleaning schedule, cooking preferences, childcare routines, etc.

✅ Respect and politeness go a long way — saying “please” and “thank you” helps build a positive atmosphere 🥰

✅ Be mindful of cultural and religious differences — respect practices like fasting during Ramadan or avoiding pork.

🎁 Bonus Tips for a Warm Start

💡 Prepare a small welcome gift (like a tumbler or towel) — it helps your helper feel at home more quickly!
