Guide to Onboarding Preparation
for a New Domestic Helper

Basic Furniture: Bed, wardrobe, fan/air conditioner, curtains, etc.
Personal Items: Bed sheets, blankets, towels, toiletries, slippers, etc. (can be prepared in advance or purchased by the helper)
First Aid Supplies: Inform the helper of the location of the first aid kit and basic procedures for seeking medical assistance.

  • Cleaning Tools: Cloths, mops, cleaning detergents, etc.
    Kitchen Supplies: If the helper is required to cook, provide cooking utensils, an apron, and other necessary items.
    Transportation and Communication: Provide the Wi-Fi password, an Octopus card, or confirm whether the use of the home telephone is permitted.

Visa and Contract: Ensure that the domestic helper holds a valid work visa and a properly signed Employment Contract.
Employee Compensation Insurance: Confirm that appropriate employee compensation insurance has been purchased for the helper in accordance with the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance.

Household Rules: Explain work arrangements, daily schedules, routines, and rest day arrangements.
Emergency Contacts: Provide contact numbers for the employer or other family members, as well as information for the building management office, nearby police station, clinic, or hospital.
Appliance Instructions: Demonstrate how to operate household appliances such as the stove, washing machine, and vacuum cleaner.

Salary Payment: Ensure compliance with the Employment Ordinance and clearly explain the salary payment schedule and method.
Leave Arrangement: Ensure compliance with the Employment Ordinance regarding weekly rest days, statutory holidays, and annual leave entitlements.

Festive Customs: Explain important family festivals or special traditions.
Communication Approach: Provide patient guidance during the initial period to avoid misunderstandings caused by cultural differences. It is recommended to communicate with the helper about her needs after she starts working and to regularly review her adjustment during the first week to foster a positive and healthy employer–employee relationship.
